VACCINES THAT CAN PROTECT YOU:

Hepatitis A

  • Hepatitis A infection is spread through contaminated food or water and by person-to-person contact with an infected person.  Travelers in countries with poor or less developed sanitation systems are at the greatest risk for infection
  • Important to follow "Food –wise and Water-smart" guidelines.
  • Hepatitis A vaccine is two injections give six (6) months apart.
  • Life time immunity.

Hepatitis B

  • Hepatitis B infection is spread by use of contaminated needles, razors, dental and medical equipment, tattooing and body piercing devices, unprotected sexual contact with infected individuals and from contaminated blood and blood products.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine is three (3) injections give over six (6) months.

Tetanus Diphtheria

  • Tetanus is a serious infection that causes progressive stiffness, rigidity, and spasms of skeletal muscle and can be fatal. Infections occur with burns and "dirty" wounds or punctures.
  • Diphtheria is a disease that is caused by bacteria infecting the skin or upper respiratory tract, which can be fatal.
  • Tetanus and diphtheria remain a global health problems
  • Recommended every 7-10 years.

Polio Vaccine

  • Polio still exists in many developing countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.  It is a viral disease that can be easily spread by contaminated food and water or by respiratory contact.
  • A onetime polio booster vaccine is recommended for adults over the age of 18 traveling to an area where polio disease is a risk.

Influenza (Flu)

  • Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can quickly become wide spread.
  • A "flu shot" is recommended annually since the type of influenza virus changes year to year.

Typhoid Fever

  • A traveler gets typhoid fever from contaminated food or water due to poor sanitation or person-to-person contact with an infected person.
  • Important to follow "Food –wise and Water-smart "guidelines.
  • Oral vaccine provides protection for 5 years, Injectable vaccine for is for 2 years.

Yellow Fever

  • Yellow fever is a viral disease caused by the bite of one species of mosquito in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America.  A mild attack may have symptoms similar to those of the flu.  However, Yellow fever can be fatal.
  • Some countries require a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever for legal entry.
  • This vaccine is a single vaccine that is valid for 10 years, beginning 10 days after your receive your vaccine.
  • Always practice personal precautions against mosquito bites between dusk and dawn.

Malaria

  • Malaria is a serious illness transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito.  Malaria is wide spread disease found in much of sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, South and Central American.  Your rick will depend on:             
  • Where within the country you travel (urban or rural)?
  • During what season (dry or rainy)?
  • What altitude level you will be at?
  • Take your anti-malarial drug exactly on schedule!  For best protection against malaria, it is important to continue taking your drug as recommended after leaving the malaria-risk area.   
  • Always practice personal precautions against mosquito bites between dusk and dawn.

Meningococcal Vaccine

  • Meningitis is a bacterial disease spread through the air by droplets of contaminated respiratory secretions (e.g. coughing or sneezing) or through person-to-person contact (e.g. kissing, sharing drinking glasses, intimate contact.
  • Areas of the sub-Saharan Africa or Saudi Arabia are the highest risk, especially during the dry winter months.
  • A vaccine that protects against the most common "types" of meningococcal meningitis is available if you are traveling to an area of increase risk.
